Weekly TD-SCDMA Update March 17-23

- In anticipation of the imminent commercialization of TD-SCDMA services, the CCAS (China Communications Standards Association) announced on March 17 that it has concluded the draft version of TD-SCDMA/GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) dual-mode mobile phone standard, Sina News reported. According to the same report, this dual-mode standard is projected to ensure compatibility between TD-SCDMA and existing 2.5G technologies in terms of technical requirements and testing methods.

- According to Nikkei Electronics Asia, Chinese ZTE and US-based Altera have reached a collaborative agreement, whereby ZTE's TD-SCDMA RRUs (Remote Radio Units) will incorporate Altera's Stratix II FPGAs (Field-Programmable Gate Array), with an aim to boost the functionality and capability of ZTE's RRUs.

- According to Xinhua News Agency, China's MII (Ministry of Information Industry) has issued 3G access licenses to two major Chinese system equipment providers ZTE and China Potevia. Whether the other two major Chinese providers Datang and TD Tech have also received the licenses is yet to be confirmed.
